Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Japanese-English Translator and Interpreter for a critical three-month manufacturing project. You will serve as the primary communication link between our local operations team and a visiting delegation of engineers from Japan. This role requires "on-the-floor" presence to facilitate the installation, commissioning, and optimization of specialized manufacturing equipment.

- $60/hour depending on experience
- Provide consecutive or simultaneous interpretation during technical meetings, engineering workshops, and safety briefings.
- Experience in manufacturing environment, understanding of working on the floor,
- Translate technical documents, including SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), equipment manuals, schematics, and safety guidelines from Japanese to English and vice-versa.
- Draft daily project reports, meeting minutes, and email correspondence between the local management and the Japanese headquarters.
- Previous experience working in a manufacturing, automotive, or engineering environment is highly preferred.
- Familiarity with manufacturing terms (e.g., Kaizen, 5S, PLC, CNC, lamination, or glass-specific processing) is a significant asset.

- Minimum 3–5 years of professional interpretation/translation experience, specifically in a technical or industrial setting.

Responsibilities
Verbal Interpretation:
- Provide consecutive or simultaneous interpretation during technical meetings, engineering workshops, and safety briefings.
- Perform "Gemba" interpretation (on the production floor) to assist engineers during equipment setup, troubleshooting, and trial runs.
- Facilitate clear communication during high-pressure technical discussions to ensure project deadlines are met.

Written Translation:
- Translate technical documents, including SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), equipment manuals, schematics, and safety guidelines from Japanese to English and vice-versa.
- Draft daily project reports, meeting minutes, and email correspondence between the local management and the Japanese headquarters.

Cultural Liaison:
- Act as a cultural bridge to help both teams navigate business etiquette and communication styles.
- Assist visiting engineers with local logistical coordination or onsite safety orientations.

Qualifications
- Language Fluency: Native or near-native fluency in both Japanese and English (JLPT N1 or equivalent certification preferred).
- Technical Background: Previous experience working in a manufacturing, automotive, or engineering environment is highly preferred.
- Terminology: Familiarity with manufacturing terms (e.g., Kaizen, 5S, PLC, CNC, lamination, or glass-specific processing) is a significant asset.
- Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of professional interpretation/translation experience, specifically in a technical or industrial setting.
- Soft Skills: High level of concentration for long interpretation sessions and the ability to remain neutral and accurate under pressure.
