As a Workplace Investigator, you play an essential role in understanding workplace concerns and complaints. Reporting to the Senior Lead, Workplace Investigator, you are a member of the labour relations team for the City of Edmonton, assisting leaders and employees function effectively in their workplaces.

In this role, you are a neutral party who investigates Respectful Workplace, Hotline, misconduct and other employment related complaints. You ensure procedural fairness in the process and approach this work in a trauma-informed manner using unbiased interview techniques. This role applies strong investigative skills along with curiosity and compassion to support the overall effectiveness of the workplace investigation function at the City of Edmonton.

What will you do?

  • Conduct thorough workplace investigations, which includes collecting relevant information by interviewing people, gathering documentation, and other forms of evidence to form a comprehensive understanding of the issue
  • Maintain procedural fairness in the application of all parts of a workplace investigation, and effectively managing difficult and sensitive situations that can have an emotional impact on all those involved
  • Ensure confidentiality and privacy of the parties involved
  • Manage multiple and simultaneous investigations, requiring strong project management, organization, documentation and communication skills
  • Demonstrate effective writing skills, key to this role is ensuring your findings and process are thoroughly and clearly documented
  • Engage employees in the workplace investigative process. Using your strong communication to effectively communicate their role, assist them in accessing support, all while gathering necessary information
  • Act as a technical resource on special projects, initiatives, policies, and processes related to workplace investigations
  • Support the development and implementation of tools, resources, and educational materials to support effective, compliant, and consistent application of workplace investigation policies and practices

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a post secondary education program (Degree or Diploma, or equivalent) in Human Resources, Labour Relations, Law or a related field
  • A minimum of 5 years of diversified and progressive human resources, including significant experience in labour and employment relations; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Assets:

  • Experience conducting workplace investigations
  • Experience in a unionized environment

Skills required for success:

  • Ability to establish and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including unions, clients, and colleagues
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively support a diverse workforce in sensitive situations and deal with conflict
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to represent the employer and interpret and administer various collective agreements
  • Computer proficiency and experience in Google applications and Human Resources Information Systems

Work Environment:

  • Ability to consistently and independently travel to all City of Edmonton work locations, including sites that are not accessible by public transit
  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
