Job Description

Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia is currently searching for an Unauthorized Practice Investigator  to join our team in Burnaby!

The Unauthorized Practice Investigator works independently to investigate and resolve concerns that unlicensed individuals or firms are engaged in engineering or geoscience or are representing themselves as engineers or geoscientists. The Investigator will take responsibility for new complaints, open files, gather necessary evidence, draft demand letters, and communicate with the target of the file in an attempt to resolve the concerns. A successful candidate will have experience with assimilating large amounts of information and have the ability to write clear and concise chronologies and summaries of evidence.

This role is part of a high-impact, high-performing team doing rewarding work to protect the public interest. The successful candidate would play an important part in improving our enforcement program while working on interesting and engaging files.

Our organization - one of BC's Top Employers – offers a competitive salary, comprehensive and generous benefits, an inclusive culture, and a hybrid work environment. Full details on our compensation and benefits value offering can be found below.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Take responsibility for the investigation and resolution of unauthorized practice and misuse of title files, including high risk and complex files, by gathering the necessary evidence and communicating directly with the target of the concern in order to bring the target into compliance with the PGA.
  • Research issues that arise during the course of an enforcement investigation. Interview witnesses and complainants by telephone, video, or in-person, identify documents that would be valuable to the investigation and make document requests from external sources.
  • Locate and retain external experts to assess whether there has been a contravention of the PGA.
  • Work with relevant internal and external parties to analyze and develop strategies for the enforcement of particularly complex or novel types of enforcement files.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new department policies, procedures, and resources.
  • Provide guidance to the Unauthorized Practice Intake Analyst in responding to complex correspondence received in the enforcement inbox.
  • Act in a fair and unbiased manner and conduct a professional enforcement investigation at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE

  • 5-7 years experience conducting investigations, preferably working in a law firm, legal department, professional regulatory body or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree is required; knowledge of engineering and geoscience is an asset but not required.
  • Strong research, analytical, and project management skills and knowledge required to successfully manage files.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well as a member of a team, as well as build relationships throughout the organization.
  • Ability to liaise with subject matter experts.
  • Ability to uphold confidentiality and manage sensitive situations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Products: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU

Each member of our team contributes to public safety in BC and helps us deliver on our vision of "modern regulation for a resilient world." We serve the public as an inclusive, progressive, and future-focused regulator. Our Strategic Plan also places priority on our role to advance climate action, foster equity, diversity and inclusion, and move towards reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.  At Engineers and Geoscientists BC, we are committed to demonstrating our values of collaboration, excellence, integrity, and innovation.

This role offers a competitive compensation and benefits program including a salary within our hiring range of $85,000 to $95,000. Placement within the hiring range will be based on candidate experience relative to the requirements of the role. Additional details on our generous benefit offerings are found below.
