The Opportunity:

WSP is currently seeking a Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technician / Technology student to join our Transportation & Infrastructure department, located at our Whitby office, while primarily working out of a Project Field Office in the Greater Toronto and Pickering Area. Reporting to a Senior Inspector and Contract Administrator / Assistant Contract Administrator, this position will be responsible to perform office duties as well as construction inspection for Municipal transportation construction projects.

Responsibilities

A day in the life:

  • Assist in inspection of Municipal transportation construction contracts;
  • Work in field offices, calculating quantities, help preparing monthly payments, finalization of contract items, record minutes of meetings and perform other general office work;
  • Perform and/or inspect quality assurance (QA) acceptance on grading, concrete, asphalt, electrical and granular;
  • Carry out all junior-level survey work required and calculate quantities by horizontal and vertical methods of measurement, for accuracy and contractor payment;
  • Maintain detailed daily diaries of contractor’s work, contract progress and inspection milestones;
  • Monitor various weigh scales for accuracy;
  • Ensure approved construction materials are used and acquired from approved sources and a record is kept of such materials;
  • Ensure inspection tasks are completed and recorded in a prompt and accurate manner;
  • Recognize when extra work needs to be done and report to the Contract Administrator;
  • Identify, document and assess deficiencies (deviations from Contractor’s Quality Control Process and or OPSS standards) in the contractor’s work;
  • Review test results and calculate Penalty/Bonus for payment or ensure remedial action occurs;
  • Monitor contractor’s adherence to all contract requirements, as per Contract Administrator’s direction; e.g. legal, environmental, construction standards, protection of wildlife, etc.;
  • Monitor contractor’s adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHIMIS, Environmental Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Waste Management regulations in a manner consistent with the contract.
  • Be a company representative and act on behalf of the company;
  • Travel and work on contracts throughout Ontario for lengthy periods at a time;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

We'd love to hear from you if you have...

  • Must be a current student registered in either a University Undergraduate Civil Engineering program or a College Civil Engineering Technician or Technology program;
  • Some experience inspecting construction projects or similar type of work pertaining to road construction is considered an asset;
  • Should have some knowledge of design standards, specifications, and materials associated with construction, Laws and Regulations including Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety requirements and their application in construction contracts;
  • Familiarity with construction contract documents, specifications, standards, manufacturer’s material specifications, C.S.A. standards and special provisions is considered an asset;
  • Ability to meet deadlines independently and under pressure;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and schedule work;
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
