The following Sessional Lecturer positions are available in the Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough for the Fall 2023 academic session. This posting is in accordance with the Collective Agreement between The Governing Council of the University of Toronto and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 3902 (Unit 3). In accordance with the Collective Agreement, this posting is being sent as an email notification to all applicants in the Department’s Applicant Pool: all Sessional Lecturers who are teaching for the Department during the current academic year or who have taught for the Department since September 1, 2005, and all persons who have submitted an application within the past thirty six months.

Course Description:
LGGA74H3 - Introductory Tamil I
An elementary course for students with minimal or no knowledge of Tamil. Students learn the Tamil script and sound system. The course also develops listening and speaking skills through culturally-based materials. Course materials are enhanced by audio-visual and computer-based activities.

Qualifications:
1. Native or near-native fluency in Tamil, preferably Sri Lankan Tamil. Teaching experience in the Tamil language.
2. M.A. or Ph. D. in Linguistics, Teaching a Foreign Language, Second Language Acquisition, or equivalent.
3. Experience with computer-assisted instruction, online courses, and language instructional software highly desirable. Command of the English language.
4. Experience teaching LGGA74H3 or equivalent.
Duties:
Teaching of one or more sections of first-year and/or second-year, and/or third-year Tamil (Jaffna Tamil preferred) to undergraduate students.
Willingness to take students off campus for Tamil immersion sessions and host guest speakers.
Willingness to replicate the pedagogy and evaluation techniques employed in the regular reaching of language courses at UofT.
All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content, development, administration, and marking of assignments and final portfolios.
Calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours, maintaining a course website, compiling teaching techniques.
Salary: in accordance with the current CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, the stipend rate for a half course (Y, F or S), inclusive of vacation pay, will be the following. Rates for replacement Sessional Lectureres will be prorated.:
Sessional Lecturer I- $9,182.42
Sessional Lecturer I LT - $9,641.55
Sessional Lecturer II- $9,826.96
Sessional Lecturer II LT- $10,025.84
Sessional Lecturer III- $10,060.93
Sessional Lecturer III LT- $10,262.15

All positions involve the completion of all course grading.
Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.
In considering qualified applicants, teaching excellence, currency in and mastery of subject area; previous experience in teaching a similar course at undergraduate (university) level or similar environment; several years related professional experience shall be the criteria used in the selection of the most qualified candidate in accordance with Article 14:12.
Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
