Language & Cultural Program Specialist

Job Location:  Moose Factory, ON

 

Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Language & Cultural Programs Coordinator, the Program Specialist shall be responsible for carrying out cultural and language learning activities designed to strengthen the Moose Cree language and to promote Moose Cree culture and identity. The major focus of this position is language revitalization to carry out activities to increase the fluency levels of learners including the development of language resources and tools, language immersion programs and conversational circles working closely with the language team of lexicographer and fluent speakers.  The other goal is to promote Cree culture and community spirit by collaborating with other community organizations and MCFN departments to carry out community events throughout the year.  He/she shall schedule and implement land-based and community-based programs including ceremonies, powwows, cultural teachings, language immersion, and language circles. He/she will assist in the day-to-day operations of the Language & Cultural Department.

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

  1. College diploma or university degree in a native language, history, or cultural discipline and/or
  2. Grade 12 diploma with extensive knowledge of the oral tradition, history, teachings, and ceremonies of the Moose Cree people.
  3. Extensive experience working with youth, community, and cultural events.
  4. Ability to speak Cree or strong belief and aptitude in working with elders/fluent speakers to learn the language.
  5. Experience in event planning.
  6. Excellent planning and coordination skills.
  7. Must be highly motivated with excellent personal, verbal, and written skills with the ability to communicate effectively.
  8. Proficient in MS Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher.
  9. Ability to work under minimal supervision and within a team framework.
  10. Must maintain confidentiality at work and in the community.
  11. Physically fit to carry out duties for land- based programming.
  12. Must be able to provide a copy of most recent CPIC upon request or proof of application.
  13. Class “G” driver’s license would be an asset.
  14. Ability to speak Cree is an asset.

 

Salary: $62,400.00 – $79,053.00

Duration: Permanent with 3-months probation
