The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical mission of the University of California, San Diego and employs 486+ full-time salaried faculty members and 100+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 600+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are 250 clinical faculty practicing at multiple sites.
Under the supervision of primary investigator (PI), the incumbent will provide support for several multisite research projects (R01) La Frontera and sub studies derived from it focusing on risks for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C (HCV) among drug users in San Diego. Duties include:
1) Recruitment and interviewing. Contact potential participants to solicit their interest in participating in the study, determine eligibility for studies in accordance with study protocols, explain studies to eligible participants and obtain informed consent, administer qualitative interviews and quantitative study questionnaires, and write field note summaries. Ensure completeness and integrity of data collection (audio recordings and questionnaires) during and after each interview and that confidentiality is strictly maintained. Provide participant referrals for medical and social services. 2) Project Administrative Support. Set up interview appointments, and participate in study meetings by phone or video conference.
Other duties assigned as needed.
Theoretical knowledge as typically acquired by a Bachelor's degree in public health, psychology or similar field.
Ability to work one-on-one comfortably and respectfully with with active drug users.
Knowledge of harm reduction principles and practices.
Experience conducting working in collaboration with community based organizations.
Ability to comply with confidentiality and human subjects requirements in the context of medical/public health research.
Ability to exercise judgment about the appropriateness of responses to ensure survey protocols.
Experience working independently and meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively and productively as part of an academic research team.
Strives at all times to present a positive attitude and pleasant, professional demeanor.
Experience recruiting, following up and interviewing active drug users.
Bilingual skills fluently in Spanish/English verbally and written.
CPR training or willing to be trained in CPR.
Must be willing to interact with active drug users, sex workers and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV+) and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) populations.
Must have access to reliable transportation. Must be willing to travel to various locations in San Diego County to recruit, follow up and interview potential participants every six months.
Occasional evenings and weekends will be required.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
