Job Description

The Houston Methodist Dr. Mary and Ron Neal Cancer Center ( HMNCC ) is seeking to fill a faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The ideal candidate will have expertise in Data Science/Artificial Intelligence , with experience in topics that span cancer risk, progression and outcomes.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be a part of the emerging Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) research program at the HMNCC during an exciting time of institutional investment and rapid expansion. Preference will be given to candidates that have a history of successful external funding, consistent with career stage. The faculty member is expected to conduct novel research that aligns with the CPC program vision and the HMNCC strategic plan, with efforts that drive reductions in the disproportionate burden of cancer on high-risk subgroups.

The CPC program is responsible for conducting research that alleviates the cancer burden across the demographically diverse HMNCC 8-county catchment area, with an emphasis on five priority cancers:  breast, prostate, lung, liver, and hematological malignancies. Additional prioritization is planned for colorectal and cervical cancers. Risk factors of particular importance to our region include obesity, tobacco use, environmental carcinogens, persistent poverty, and climate events. The Greater Houston metropolitan region is expected to experience significant increases in racial and ethnic diversity in the next decade, making it an ideal setting for conducting diverse cohort studies and contributing to generating a knowledge base around cancer etiology that benefits the entire nation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The faculty member will provide support to the developing CPC program at the HMNCC relating to scientific, policy, and programmatic issues. Specifically, the faculty member should contribute and possess:

• Strong expertise in research design & methodology.
• Ability to identify research gaps and anticipate new research directions and opportunities.
• Dedicated efforts to addressing disproportionate cancer burdens across the cancer continuum.
• Translational research expertise to complement the Data Science/AI expertise with at least one of the following areas: environmental epidemiology, biological and social drivers of cancer burden, genetic and -omics epidemiologic research, bioinformatics, and/or geospatial mapping.

• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a transdisciplinary team.
• Must have exceptional mentorship skills of early career faculty, trainees, and/or staff.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful applicants must have:

• A professional degree (PhD, MD, DrPH, or ScD) in a discipline related to epidemiology, population sciences, data science/artificial intelligence, biostatistics/bioinformatics, or a related discipline.
• Consistent with career stage, successful applicants must also have:

1. Evidence of peer-reviewed extramural research funding
2. Publications in professional journals, including high impact articles for the ranks of Associate and Full Professor
3. A record of collaborative and team science approaches in health-related research
4. A record of participation in educational training programs and mentorship

Key assets will include experience in building diverse patient cohorts, use of publicly available cancer datasets, and dedication to alleviating the cancer burden for high-risk sub-groups.
