: Wyoming County Correctional Facility Correctional Officer Position Description Mission Statement: The Mission Statement of the Wyoming County Correctional Facility is established as follows: Wyoming County Correctional Facility is part of the criminal justice system in Wyoming County. Its primary function is to detain inmates as ordered by the courts in a manner that assures maximum possible safety for the public, the correctional staff and its population. The facility shall provide a holding area for pre-trial and post-trial detainees. The facility shall provide punishment of sentenced offenders through the act of incarceration. The facility shall provide the opportunity for programs, treatment and interaction that will prepare the person for responsible community living. Among these programs are religious training and worship, education, recreation, work programs, and health services. The facility shall be planned, developed, built, and established to meet the requirements of the United States Constitution, Pennsylvania Constitution and relevant Federal and Pennsylvania Statutory and Case Law. General Definition: This is work in maintaining order, supervision of conduct and providing nonprofessional counseling of residents in the Wyoming County Correctional Facility on assigned shifts. Shifts shall be assigned by the warden in a nondiscriminatory manner regardless of sex, race, etc. An employee in this position is responsible for the prevention of escape, maintaining discipline and providing advice and guidance in assisting residents in their adjustment to a correctional environment, as well as getting them involved in programs offered by the institution. Employees are responsible for control of keys, maintaining log books and other internal records of residents' activities as required by the facility. Work is preformed in accordance with written rules, regulations and special oral instructions of the Warden/Deputy Warden or their designee who reviews work by inspections. Typical Example of Work: Take residents to work assignments and maintain order and discipline on places of assembly. Participate in nonprofessional counseling of residents on situational problems chiefly associated to the facility environment. Supervise work details of a varied nature both inside and outside the facility environment. Supervise residents during showering, meals and recreational periods. Search residents for contraband after visits and upon entering the facility after performing work outside the facility (strip search and pat search). Issue clothing and housekeeping supplies to residents as required. Supervise daily clean up of resident's quarters and designated areas of the facility. Process residents in and out of the facility which includes, but not limited to. Gathering information, completing a search of the inmate's property for contraband, and escorting residents to and from various housing units. Observe and report changes in personality and demeanor of residents. Responsible for the orderly movements of residents inside and outside the facility. Take on the spot disciplinary measures as required to maintain order and protect residents from harming themselves or others. Prepare and submit misconduct reports involving incidents of a major nature to the Warden/Deputy Warden. Monitor and maintain order during organized programs and activities, such as classes, church and recreational activities. Other assignments as directed by the Warden/ Deputy Warden or their designee. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Basic knowledge of the purpose and methods used in maintaining order and discipline in a correctional facility. Some knowledge and understanding of individual and group behavior and attitudes of men/women under restraint. Knowledge or methods used in search and inspection to include the reason for those practices. Minimum Training and Experience: Education equivalent to completion of 12th grade. Any acceptable equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience. Rules and Regulations for all Facility Officers/employees: All staff shall work a full eight hour shift unless scheduled otherwise by the Warden/Deputy Warden. Officers will not leave their post until relieved by another officer. All officers/staff are required to read and understand the Policy and Procedures Manuel and Post Orders. Officers are required to read, understand and enforce all additions to the night orders prior to each shift. The oncoming shift shall inspect conditions and be briefed by the off going shift on inmate population, activities, inmate conduct, etc. Interior checks shall be conducted and logged daily. Officers/staff will report to work with a neat and clean appearance. Hair, beard and mustache will be kept neat and clean at all times. Officers/staff will report to work in a stable frame of mind. Officers will be dressed in full uniforms at all times while on duty. Uniforms are not to be worn off duty. Officers/staf
