About Us

 

The Department of Emergency Management is responsible for leading disaster and emergency planning, preparedness, response and recovery activities on behalf of the Province of Nova Scotia. The objective of the Department is to ensure that Nova Scotians are safe, prepared and resilient in the face of disasters and emergencies. The Department leads the coordination and co-operation of partners and resources during provincial level critical incidents, supports municipal and other partners in regional level and local events, administers the province’s 911 service, maintains critical communications infrastructure and supports operations of our regional emergency management centers. The Department also works to ensure critical government services continue to function during and after critical events.

We’re seeking to hire an experienced communicator who is passionate about delivering clear, impactful messages. The ideal candidate will be skilled in developing effective and innovative communication strategies to use before, during and after emergency events, and will play a key role in the coordination of internal and external communications during both planned and unplanned emergency situations. They will have experience working with a diverse range of audiences to deliver innovative, accessible and inclusive strategies, and will be expected to brief and advise the Minister, Deputy Minister and senior leaders in the department.

Primary Accountabilities

 

The Communications Advisor works with staff and clients to develop and implement communications strategies and programs for the department. By promoting the public’s understanding of the department’s programs and services including the Nova Scotia Guard, they ensure the priorities, policies and actions of government are clearly communicated. Through working with communications professionals in other government departments, they will support an integrated communications approach to emergencies. Responsibilities include:

  • developing partner communications
  • providing advice to senior staff and elected officials
  • media relations
  • issues management
  • social media
  • producing, editing and writing speeches, materials for public announcements, and content for various digital/traditional channels including web

 

Occasional evening and weekend work may be required, especially during active emergency situations.

Qualifications and Experience

 

University degree in a related discipline and several years’ professional communications experience or an acceptable equivalent. The successful candidate will have strong writing skills, a background in developing and implementing communications strategies, experience in social media and digital communications technologies, and experience dealing with a diverse range of key partners including municipalities and the media.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment, under tight deadlines.

Salary Range: $3,418.96 - $4,273.75 Bi-Weekly
